You are only strong and resilient in ranges of motion you move in with integrity. Stretching is not always the answer to tightness. Actually, tightness is often a sign of weakness and instability. In this case, stretching makes the condition worse.

 Often, after surgery or other injury, you do the right thing and go through physical therapy. Even if you were the exception, and did all of your exercises at home in perfect form and frequency, there will still be gaps in your strength and kinetic integration. Asymmetry in mobility and strength (due to over or under use, or previous injury) is a key risk factor predicting injury.

  • Do you find it challenging to look up and get your body under control when following a lob? Maybe you end up on your heels and almost fall backward?   
  • Do you find it hard to get low enough to return some balls? Maybe your low back gets sore after playing or your have just settled for not being able to return the low ones?
 To move quickly, even a few steps requires power. If all contributing muscles, joints (tendons, ligaments and fascia) are not equipped to generate or manage that power, you will experience disfunction and eventually, pain.
